All Wrapped Up

From time to time I like to pretend that I am famous. This time, I decided to be a Bollywood star – minus the singing and jumping from behind a tree.

One of my dear Sri Lankan girlfriends were getting married and it was the perfect opportunity to wear a saree that I had bought two years ago. The problem however is that I didn’t know exactly how to dress myself. You see, it’s one really long rectangular piece of fabric that needs to be wrapped or “draped” around your body.

The good news is that you can find anything on YouTube. I watched video upon video practicing with my saree. My dear husband would glance up from time to time from his laptop saying “you got this” or “it looks awesome.”

The day arrives and I suddenly have no freaking idea how to wrap this thing. My makeup and hair was done. I even had a bindi on my forehead. The ipad was propped up as I tirelessly attempted to get dressed. Time was running out.

My sister Linda casually walks towards me, wine glass in hand, and says “you’re doing this all wrong.” She proceeds to magically drape the saree. We decided that it would be draped in front instead of at the back. It turned out pretty FABULOUS.

Linda decided to wear a long evening gown to the magical wedding. I love how this dress showcases Linda’s hourglass figure. The dress is from Jonathan’s Bridal in New Westminster.

Now let me show you a true Sri Lankan beauty. Ms. L. W. This lady can rock a saree like none other. Being one of the sisters of the bride, she looked absolutely radiant. This saree is from Sri Lanka. The gorgeous deep green colour was really brought out by the embroidery and crystals. I love that the top area is net which showcases the gorgeous saree blouse.  Isn't she gorgeous? Just perfection.

Faking It

Lashes lashes lushes lashes. Say that fast five times.

Ladies, how do you feel about fake lashes?

The first time I ever wore fake lashes was on my wedding day. They annoyed me so much that I went to the bathroom half way through my reception and ripped them off. This is a true story.

I have worn fake lashes about a handful of times but I must say that I am now converted.  They completely change the overall look of your eyes.

I only wear fake lashes on occasions where I get completely dolled up. They take a bit of practise but I think the end results are completely worth it.

I found a great deal at a Korean store in New Westminster. 10 pairs of lashes for $10.00! The glue, which is made in Japan, was $12.00. But as the sales girls told “trust me, we know how to wear lashes.” Asian girls know their lash products. I trusted them and I am glad that I did.

A few tips:

1. Bend the lashes on your thumb to create some flexibility
2. Apply the glue and wait for about 15 seconds to make the glue a bit tacky before applying on your eyelid
3. Use a tweezer to lightly push the lashes into your eyelid
4. Once they are dry, I apply mascara to blend my lashes with the fake lashes (but if you plan to reuse them do not apply mascara)
5. Pack your glue with you as you may have to touch up a corner that might lift up as you dance the night away.

Rules are Meant to be Broken

I am rule follower.

I rarely break the rules in life – that’s just a part of my type A personality. He he.

But what I have started to do is bend and sometimes break the rules when it comes to fashion. I just love the way fashion has progressed where colour blocking, pattern contradictions, and manipulating an outfit in a way that’s unique to you is totally acceptable now.

Pairing my new green wedges mentioned here with my royal blue peplum skirt mentioned here broke some of the rules.

The colours don’t necessarily complement each other. So I decided to wear a solid while t-shirt to ground the outfit. Adding another vibrant colour to the mix would have been a bit much. Yes, I am capable of paring down the flash when necessary. My white Fossil watch also added a casual element needed to also ground the outfit.

Remember, as long as your attitude matches your outfit, no one can call you out for breaking some of the rules. Wear it. Own it.

Express Yourself

I was cutting across the mall through The Bay. Just minding my own business and looking at all the colourful handbags. Internal voice said “blah, I don’t need another purse.” So I kept walking.

I walked a little further and then BAM! I stopped dead in my tracks. I was suddenly in the middle of enormous shoe sale. 60% off and then take off an additional 30%. I almost let out a large gasp.

My husband knew that I would need a minute or two so he tapped me on my shoulder and said “I’ll come back in about 45 minutes ok.” These are the times I truly feel blessed. The man gets me. He really gets me.

I was completely overwhelmed. My eyes scanned left and right. I headed straight to the tables with my size. Pure heaven!

I didn’t realize that The Bay’s very own line, Expression, had such gorgeous shoes.

Out of all the pairs I tried, I only ended up buying two pairs. Both pairs were from Expression. Just today I browsed The Bay’s website and they have a lot of shoes from this brand on sale.

I also found a black pair of satin heels with a glitter bow at the back. Classic. Timeless. Gorgeous. They didn’t have my size. After pouting and making the poor clerk check the system twice I took a picture of these gorgeous creatures to keep my little heart content.

(I forgot the name brand)

But I walked away with these two beauties. I have already worn them quite a bit. They are both comfortable.

The orange strap across the heel adds an unexpected element of colour to the tan heel. The slim tan strap across the toes is also quite flattering. You can wear a longer pair or jeans / pants to hide the orange detail but I like the colour.

 Expressions: Siena

I love green right now so these wedges will certainly be my go-to shoe this summer. The cork platform makes these shoes oh so comfortable.

Well I hope you feel inspired to check out The Bay's Expression line. Let me know if you found a pair you fell in love with.
